One to Lift the World

Character, not circumstances, makes the man.

Circumstances matter, but they do not settle the whole question of who a person is becomi ng. Character keeps answering from a deeper place. Washington's authority on this point is earned rather than abstract. He does not erase hardship. He refuses to let hardship become the only lens through which worth and strength are measured. The line lasts because it restores moral agency without pretending life is even. That balance is rare and durable.
