There is a form of victory that consists in not surrendering your interio r life. Loss does not have to receive your whole identity with it. The smile here is not denial or frivolity. It is defiance of the idea that injury gets the final word over spirit. Shakespeare catches resilience at its most compact. Even when something is taken, not everything can be taken.
