Honest work tends to leave a residue, even when the gain is not immediately obvi ous. Labor usually gives more than motion alone. The proverb is not naive about timing. Profit may appear as skill, stability, credibility, or provision, but the point is that disciplined effort is seldom empty. The line's strength is its plainness. It does not glamorize labor; it simply refuses to treat it as futile.
