Most worthwhile things ask something of the person pursuing them. Cost is not alwa ys a sign that the effort is misplaced. Franklin's phrasing is terse because the principle is simple. Growth, skill, and stability usually arrive through strain, repetition, and a willingness to bear some discomfort well. The sentence survives because reality keeps confirming it. Cheap shortcuts rarely produce durable substance.
