Day 88
Week 13 Day 4: What Q2 Will Teach You
Q1 taught you how money grows. Q2 will teach you where to put it: the different containers -- 401(k), Roth IRA, brokerage -- and what goes in each.
Lesson Locked
Think of Q1 as learning how to grow plants. Q2 is learning which pots to use. Different account types (401(k), Roth IRA, taxable brokerage) have different tax treatments, different rules, and different purposes. Putting the right assets in the right containers can save you hundreds of thousands in taxes over a lifetime.
Here is a preview of Q2. Weeks 14-15: Account types demystified. The 401(k) gives you a tax deduction today. The Roth IRA gives you tax-free growth forever. The taxable brokerage account gives you flexibility with no penalties. Each has a role. Weeks 16-22: Asset classes. Stocks versus bonds. Domestic versus international. Real estate. Gold. Bitcoin. What each is, what it does, and where it fits (or does not). Weeks 23-25: Active versus passive investing. Growth versus value. Small cap versus large cap. The evidence on what actually works and what is marketing. Week 26: The Five Building Blocks -- putting it all together into a portfolio that matches your life stage. Q2 transitions you from 'I understand the principles' to 'I know exactly where to put every dollar.'
The Q1-to-Q2 transition mirrors the academic distinction between the accumulation decision (how much to save -- covered in Q1) and the allocation decision (how to invest savings -- covered in Q2). Modern Portfolio Theory (Markowitz, 1952) formalized the allocation decision as an optimization problem: maximizing expected return for a given level of risk, or minimizing risk for a given expected return. The 'efficient frontier' concept describes the set of optimal portfolios that offer the highest expected return for each level of volatility. In practice, most individual investors need not solve the optimization problem themselves -- a combination of low-cost total stock market and total bond market index funds, in proportions appropriate to their time horizon, approximates the efficient frontier closely enough for practical purposes. Q2 will provide the framework to make this allocation decision with confidence.
