Bible Verses About Hope: Scripture on God's Promises

The confident expectation of God's promises

Hope in the Bible is not the same as wishful thinking. The Greek word elpis used in the New Testament describes a confident expectation based on the character and promises of God — not an uncertain wish. Romans 5:5 says "hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts." This is the foundation of biblical hope: it is rooted in who God is and what He has promised, making it a reliable anchor even when circumstances are bleak.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about hope?

Romans 15:13 calls God the 'God of hope' who fills believers with joy and peace so that they overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jeremiah 29:11 records God's promise: 'For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' Hebrews 6:19 describes hope as 'an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.'

What is the difference between faith and hope in the Bible?

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as 'confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.' Hope and faith are closely linked — faith is the substance of hope, and hope is the forward orientation that faith takes. Hope looks forward to what God has promised; faith trusts that those promises are real and will be fulfilled.
