Bible Verses About Fear: Overcoming Fear with Scripture
Scripture to help you trust God instead of giving in to fear
Fear is woven throughout the Bible — from the first instance where God tells Adam not to be afraid, to the angels' consistent greeting of "do not fear" whenever they appear to humans. The Bible does not dismiss fear as trivial; it acknowledges it as real and then repeatedly points to the same answer: God's presence. With over two hundred passages addressing fear across both Old and New Testaments, Scripture builds a comprehensive case for courage grounded in relationship with God rather than circumstances.

What does the Bible say about fear?
The Bible consistently contrasts fear with faith and trust in God. God's instruction "do not fear" or "fear not" appears hundreds of times across Scripture. Isaiah 41:10 says: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God." 2 Timothy 1:7 teaches that "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." The Bible distinguishes between unhealthy fear that paralyzes and reverent fear of God which is the beginning of wisdom.
What is the most powerful Bible verse about overcoming fear?
Joshua 1:9 is frequently cited: 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.' Psalm 34:4 is also deeply comforting: 'I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.'
Is it a sin to feel fear according to the Bible?
No, the Bible does not treat fear as sin. Fear is a natural human response. What the Bible warns against is allowing fear to govern our decisions and override trust in God. Jesus himself experienced anguish in Gethsemane. The biblical call to "fear not" is a call to choose trust over anxiety — not a condemnation of the feeling itself.
